Areas of Activity

Food Engineering

research, projects and support for companies on plant and engineering issues, with particular reference to technological innovation, of both process and product, and to the validation of processes (heat penetration in sterilization and pasteurization processes) and plants (retorts and other types of sterilizers and pasteurizers) for the thermal treatment of foods.

Metrology

service to companies for calibration through ACCREDIA certification of equipment for temperature measurement (resistance thermometers and thermometric chains for thermoresistance) and internal and external services with reference to national data-logger measurement samples, scales and pressure gauges.

Food Engineering

The Area carries out applied research and service activities for companies with regard to processes as well as food plants and preserving processes.
The main activities include:

applied research in the field of unit operations and transportation phenomena in the food industry, with particular reference to thermal processes;

study and experimentation of innovative food processing and preserving technologies (high pressures, electromagnetic technologies, etc.);

service of experimental technological tests on pilot plants for companies that intend to optimize existing processes/products or develop new processes/products;

service to companies in determining the rheological properties of foods (measurement of apparent viscosity, evaluation of flow curves for non-Newtonian fluids, estimation of rheological parameters, etc.).

Among the most requested and qualifying activities, there is undoubtedly the processes of and food heat treatment plants validation (pasteurization, sterilization).
The Area offers to companies, both in-house and at the companies themselves, the following services:

determination of heat penetration and calculation of time-temperature parameters and F0 sterilizing effect in various types of packages (tinplate, glass, polymers) having different shapes and sizes and containing any kinds of foods, subjected to heat treatment;

determination of heat distribution in the course of heat treatments inside different types of plants: air, steam and water retorts, continuous sterilizers, pasteurization tunnels, etc.

News Metrologia

The validation activities are carried out using suitable and efficient equipment (Datalogger, temperature recorders with type T thermocouples etc.) following the techniques and procedures provided and recognized by the main international organizations such as the FDA.
Companies that make specific and detailed request for validation activities will be sent the best offer, calculated according to type and quantity of products and/or plants, to the request, if any, for external intervention, to commitment working hours and to the relating rates (facilitated for contributing companies).

Metrology

The guarantee of the quality and safety of food companies’ products, and therefore their success and the protection of investments that are often huge, inevitably depends on the precision and efficiency of a series of measuring instruments, not necessarily sophisticated, of parameters such as mass, pressure and, above all, temperature.

The great attention of the European and national legislators for the compliance with the requirements concerning the control of food temperatures (fully introduced in the general and specific requirements regarding food hygiene by EC Regulation No. 852/2004), combined with wide dissemination of quality management system certifications according to the ISO standards and to the development of an increasingly complex market, in which GDO demands precise safety guarantees and pre-established production standards, regardless of the size of the supplying company, has created a special interest in the check of monitoring and measurement devices.

Within this framework, in order to support companies for a qualified measurement equipment calibration service, for the past ten years SSICA has established a Metrological Laboratory at its headquarters in Angri (SA).
To be sure of providing a valid service to companies, the Metrological Laboratory has set up a Quality System, implemented according to the UNI CEI EN ISO/IEC 17025: 2005 standard, receiving ACCREDIA accreditation with certificate no. 0199.

The Quality System guarantees a high level of performance in carrying out calibrations, in terms of uncertainty and reliability, correct management of the equipment, clarity of expression of calibration data, confidentiality, impartiality and a profitable relationship of assistance and information with the Customer.

(*) Measurement uncertainty is expressed at the 95% confidence level.
(**) Uris is the uncertainty contribution due to the resolution of the instrument.

The Laboratory assists companies with all the operations that lead to metrological confirmation, in accordance with the UNI EN ISO 10012: 2004 standard. The metrological confirmation consists of all those operations necessary to ensure that a measuring device complies with the requirements for the intended use. This activity includes calibration, verification and confirmation starting from the analysis of the measurement needs connected with process control.

The SSICA Metrological Laboratory is able to provide an instrument calibration service by issuing an Accredia certification (internationally recognized by all countries belonging to the EA – European Cooperation for Accreditation, Italian Administrations and Public Bodies, Certification Bodies of Quality Systems valid in almost all European countries adhering to the Multilateral Agreement) in the temperature measurement sector for the following types of instruments, according to the parameters of the table at the side:

Resistance thermometers

Thermometric chains for thermoresistances

The Laboratory also carries out calibrations with reference to national measurement standards, for the following types of instruments:

Data-Logger

Scales

Pressure gauges.

For the instruments listed above, the Laboratory performs calibrations both on site and on clients’ production plants, releasing the calibration report with reference to national and international measurement standards.
Companies that make specific and detailed request for calibration activities will be sent our best offer, calculated according to the number of instruments to be calibrated and calibration points, to the request, if any, for external calibration, to commitment working hours and to the relating rates (facilitated for contributing companies).
